What is Critical Illness Cover?

Critical illness cover is a type of life insurance policy that offers protection in the event of a serious illness or injury.

There are two types of Critical Illness Cover: 

  • Additional cover policies can pay out more than once. It will pay out if you are diagnosed with a critical illness and in the event of death.
  • Combined cover policies payout 100% in one go, for the chosen cover amount upon diagnosis of a critical illness or at death (not both)

What does Critical Illness Cover?

They also cover a variety of other serious illnesses and conditions as well as some physical disabilities following an injury. The conditions covered vary slightly between providers as well as the severity of the condition that is covered.

  • Your age; the younger you take it out the cheaper it is
  • Your current health and lifestyle
  • Smoking and Alcohol consumption
  • Any pre-existing conditions you have/have had
  • The amount of cover and the term of the policy

There are two payment types/options when considering a Critical Illness Cover policy

  • Guaranteed Premiums – the premium stays the same for the life of the policy. These tend to start off slightly more expensive but as long as the policy is not altered you will always pay the same the premium each month
  • Reviewable premiums – these can often be cheaper to start with but are ‘age reviewed’ so in effect the premium increases slowly over time based on your age
